Types of Pruning

In most cases light pruning can be carried out at any time of year. Heavy pruning or the pruning of large branches on trees is best carried out during winter while the tree is dormant. Plant species that are prone to frost damage should generally be pruned after flowering in midsummer. Experts recommend avoiding pruning in autumn as there are a lot of fungal spores in the air, and the risk of infection and disease in too high at this time. A different array of tools are required for pruning tasks, these can range from secateurs, loppers and pruning saws, to chainsaws and petrol driven pole saws. Also a good set of gardeners steps with an adjustable working height of up to 20 foot are necessary for hard to reach branches or climbers.
